On May 22, 2014, the SAE Foundation hosted its 18th Annual Celebration Dinner at the Masonic Temple in Detroit, MI. The event brought together a great many corporate sponsors, industry leaders, donors, volunteers, teachers and students who are involved in SAE’s science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs - A World In Motion® (AWIM), Collegiate Design Series™ (CDS) and F1 in Schools™.
Among the highlights of the evening Osamu Nagata, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing North America was honored with the Industry Leadership Award.
Toyota has been a long-standing supporter of the SAE Foundation's STEM outreach programs. In addition to financial assistance from the Toyota Foundation USA, Toyota Engineering and Manufacturing North America provides mentors and volunteers who help reach students participating in SAE’s World in Motion K-12 programs.
During his acceptance speech, Nagata-san said:
"We know that there is a widening gap between the industry's need and the availability of engineering and technician talent. We need to increase our emphasis on STEM education, and direct more resources to preparing the next-generation workforce. That's why we appreciate what the SAE Foundation is doing."
Overall, there was a strong sense that the SAE Foundation is essential to the development of the STEM savvy workforce of today and the innovative workforce of tomorrow.
The Ableson Award for Visionary Leadership went to Joseph B. Anderson Jr.
The Stefan Pischinger Young Industry Leadership Awards, sponsored by FEV, went to
Yanping Xia, Ph.D.,
Delphi Automotive Systems
Again, the SAE Foundation Board of Trustees and staff would like to say thank you to all of you who came and enjoyed the evening and for your unwavering support of our efforts to encourage and increase student participation and achievement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We hope to see you again next year!
