AWIM and General Motors volunteers: Celebrating another successful year making a difference in young lives
Nearly 600 of the more than 1,000 GM volunteers who support SAE International's A World In Motion® program gathered for the 6th annual recognition event hosted by GMNA Engineering Vice President Ed Koerner. Attendees at the breakfast event included out-of-state GM employees, retirees and representatives from 29 corporate sponsors. Special guests in attendance included Rick Wagoner, GM Chairman and CEO, Sheri Hickok, AWIM® Program Manager for GM and Matt Miller, Manager of SAE International's K-12 Education Programs.
Rick Wagoner, who has been a Chairman of the AWIM Executive Committee for 12 years, said, "One of the most important things we can do is promote education, and I particularly think technical education is so important for the future success of our business, of our country, and AWIM really gets at the core of that. It's a terrific program, but it wouldn't work without the people who are willing to go into the schools and put their own time into it."
Due to volunteer growth, GM has been able to increase their school involvement by 26 percent and to impact more than 14,000 students. This year, 21 volunteers received awards for their continuous dedication of five years to the AWIM program. In addition, special recognitions were awarded including Team AWIM(recognizing an outstanding AWIM team) to Cooper Elementary, Livonia, Michigan.
In his closing remarks to the audience, Koerner said, "Remember, this program is not about the enablers or the initiatives, it's about results, and that's the kids."
