Boeing Engineer Ryan Gibson Honored with SAE International Award for Technical Innovation and Leadership

SAE International announces that Ryan Gibson, Senior Design Engineer with The Boeing Company, is the recipient of the 2017 Steven M. Atkins Ability and Achievement in Science, Engineering, and Technology Award.

Gibson received the award during the SAE AeroTech Congress and Exhibition, recently held in Fort Worth, Texas. He is a Technical Lead Engineer for The Boeing Company’s 787 Interiors Lighting team; and has developed a wide range of new products—more than 20 in the past four years—for the 787 airplane, such as improved electrical dimmable windows and new passenger information signs.

Gibson has implemented a new supplier for photo-luminescent strips, and has renegotiated four engineering contracts with new and existing suppliers. His innovative efforts have resulted in an impressive savings of $6.8 million through cost reductions and improved supplier contracts. Because of his dedicated emphasis on pursuing disability inclusion and enabling technology at The Boeing Company, he has been directly involved with or initiated influential programs that are an established process within Boeing today.

The Boeing Company has honored Gibson with their highest Diversity awards, including the Global Diversity Change Agent Award in 2013 and 2015, the Global Diversity Process Improvement Award in 2013, and two Team Diversity and Inclusion Champion Awards in 2016. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering and MBA from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Established in 2011, the Steven Atkins Award recognizes the significant technical achievements brought about by innovation, leadership and inspiration of employees with disabilities working in the aerospace engineering industry. It also demonstrates the deeper scope and reach of SAE International to mobility engineering professionals. The award was established to recognize aerospace employees with disabilities who, through their technical achievements, innovation, leadership and inspiration, have contributed to the aerospace industry. The award honors Steven M. Atkins, retired Vice President, Product Integrity and Functional Excellence, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
