New SAE STEM Curriculum Teaches Students Online Safety

Elementary students can now learn how to engage with technology and the digital world in a positive, responsible way with Navigating the Digital Universe—the newest Computer Science-STEM curriculum from SAE A World In Motion® (AWIM).

Character-Driven Curriculum Keeps Students Engaged

With the help of a trusted robot named Maze, students explore five planets to learn the importance of digital safety, communication, literacy, and ethics. This new interactive, character-driven curriculum creates an emotional connection between young learners and content—providing compelling learning opportunities and dramatically improving knowledge retention.

“Preparing students for a new digital world is imperative. They need to learn how to engage with technology in a way that empowers them to make positive, responsible decisions,” said Allison Hostetler, SAE Pre-Professional Program Director. “Transforming students to responsible digital citizens is the best way to develop a generation of safe, smart, and empathetic online users,” she added.

Flexible Delivery Options for Educators

Aligned with national education standards, Navigating the Digital Universe can be implemented in virtual, hybrid, or in-person classrooms. To aid in delivery, educators have access to a detailed teacher guide, lesson plans, training resources, and supporting materials—all provided via a user-friendly online portal. Students can also capture their questions, ideas, observations, and reflections using interactive AWIM Notebooks which are also included.

In pilot, the resounding feedback from educators highlighted how the combination of engaging activities and relevant content helps students make connections and apply core concepts in their real life. Teachers shared “it was amazing how many students mentioned that their mood has been influenced by technology…[and] that it taught them to have more self-control and inspired them to take a break from their devices more often.”

Responsible Digital Citizens

Through blended hands-on and digital activities, Navigating the Digital Universe equips young learners with real-life tools they need to be responsible digital citizens–how to be kind, how to protect their private life, and how to create a healthy balance between their online and offline worlds—practical lessons that will last a lifetime.
